Important Updates!
Hello hackers!
Only 1 week until our submission period opens! Until then, we're excited to announce even more big updates to our event, including:
- Hackathon prompt
- New internship prize + more prize updates
- New sponsors & goodies
- Schedule updates
Read all about it below!
First things first, the hackathon theme you've all been waiting for! All hackathon projects should work to address this theme in some way, but remember, no coding until 12/3. Our one-word theme is..... communication! We look forward to your submissions addressing this theme.
Next, a major update to prizes. Thanks to our sponsors at MRI Software, we're excited to offer an internship with MRI Software as a new prize for Hackathon: Best Overall! MRI and Steel City Hacks will reach out to winning team members to organize the details of a potential internship for a team member. The job description is flexible: paid or unpaid, school credit or none, mentorship or job shadow, virtual or in-person... these options can be decided between MRI and the winning intern! Please note: if all team members on the winning team decline this offer, it will be passed down the awards list (e.g. next to Hackathon 2nd Place). This information is also available on our Resources page.
In addition, we're excited to update prizes courtesy of our sponsors at DigitalOcean. To become eligible for these awards, please create a DigitalOcean account (comes with $200, 60-day free trial!).
- Hackathon Best Overall Places 1, 2, and 3, as well as Ideathon Best Overall and Hackathon Most Technically Complex all receive $250 in DigitalOcean credits for the team
- Hackathon Most Creative, Hackathon Compelling Beginner Project, Ideathon Most Relevant, and Ideathon Best Presentation all receive $100 in DigitalOcean credits for the team
We also have new sponsored goodies for participants!
- All participants new to DigitalOcean can redeem a $200, 60-day free trial at this link
- All participants can redeem a 1-month trial of echo3D's Premium plan at this link
Finally, we have some updates to our optional event schedule, available at this permalink. We apologize for the delays in scheduling, but we're excited to announce that:
- Our Kickoff Ceremony will run on 12/3 from 12:00-12:30pm EST at this Zoom link
- Our Git & Collaborative Coding workshop will run on 12/4 from 5:00-6:00pm EST at this Zoom link
- Our Hardware & Intro to CS Theory workshop will run on 12/6 from 5:00-6:30pm EST at this Zoom link
Our other optional events will be scheduled in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for updates on the schedule doc! We'll send out another reminder once all events have their final dates and times. As a reminder, all events will be recorded and distributed to participants, so no sweat if you miss one!
Thanks for making it to the end of this email! Stay tuned for more updates on our schedule, judging panel, goodies for participants, and ideathon prompt. We're always available for support on our Discord, Discussion Forum, or via emailing hackathons@steelcitycodes.org.
